Most local businesses in Utah are choosing between the same three channels, and they are usually presented as competing options. They are not. They do different jobs on different timelines, and the order you turn them on matters more than which one you believe in.
What each one actually is
Local Services Ads sit at the very top of the results page, above paid search and above the map pack, with a Google Guaranteed badge. You pay per lead rather than per click, and you can dispute leads that were not genuine. Getting in requires license and insurance verification and a background check.
Google Ads is paid search below LSA. You pay per click, you control the keywords and the landing pages, and you can be live the same day.
Local SEO covers the map pack and organic results. You pay for work rather than placement, and it compounds. It is also the slowest of the three by a wide margin.
The timelines are the real difference
- LSA: leads within days of approval, but approval itself can take weeks depending on how quickly your paperwork clears.
- Google Ads: clicks the same day, meaningful data within two weeks.
- Local SEO: movement usually somewhere between month three and month six, and longer in competitive city and trade combinations.
If you need calls this month, SEO is not the answer regardless of how good an investment it is. If you need a business that is not renting every lead in three years, paid alone is not the answer either.
Where the first dollar goes, by situation
You need calls now and you qualify for LSA. Start there. Pay-per-lead above everything else on the page, with the ability to dispute junk, is the most efficient starting position available to a licensed trade. Get the verification started immediately, because that is the long pole.
You need calls now and you do not qualify for LSA. Google Ads, tightly geo-targeted, on a small number of high-intent terms, pointed at a landing page about that specific service. Not a broad campaign pointed at your homepage.
You have steady work and want to reduce cost per lead over time. Local SEO. It is the only one of the three that gets cheaper the longer you do it, and the map pack is where most local intent resolves.
You have none of the above sorted. Fix the Google Business Profile first. It is free, it feeds the map pack, and it is the single most neglected asset in local marketing. Categories, services, hours, photographs, and reviews. Do that before you spend anything.
The sequence that usually works
For most licensed trades along the Wasatch Front, the order looks like this:
- Google Business Profile fixed properly, and tracking installed so you can attribute calls
- LSA verification started, because it takes the longest to clear
- Google Ads on a narrow set of high-intent terms, to produce calls while the rest matures
- Local SEO running underneath the whole time, compounding
- Paid spend reduced as organic and map pack placement improve
The mistake we see most often is step three running for a year without step four ever starting, so the business is still renting every lead at the same price it was paying at the beginning.
What changes the order
Emergency trades — plumbing, HVAC repair, electrical faults, water damage — weight harder toward LSA and paid, because the search happens at the moment of need and the buyer calls the first credible option.
Considered purchases — remodels, landscaping design, legal matters — weight harder toward organic and content, because the buyer researches for weeks and a page that answers their question earns the call.
Seasonal trades need the SEO work done well before the season and the paid budget concentrated inside it.
What we will not promise
We will not tell you what your cost per lead will be on any of these before looking at your market. It varies by trade, by city, by season and by how fast you answer the phone. Anyone quoting you a number in the first conversation is guessing.
We also will not tell you to run all three at once because it is more billable. If your budget only supports doing one properly, doing one properly beats doing three badly.
What each channel costs to run properly
Not in dollars, which vary by market, but in what it demands of you. This is the part that decides whether a channel works, and it is rarely discussed in the pitch.
Local Services Ads demand responsiveness. Answer rate affects how often you are shown, and unclaimed lead disputes mean paying for wrong numbers every month. Roughly half an hour a week, done consistently.
Google Ads demand attention to the search terms report. Left alone, an account drifts towards cheap irrelevant traffic. Every two weeks at minimum.
Local SEO demands patience and a review habit. Very little weekly effort, considerable consistency, and results that arrive too slowly to feel like progress month to month.
A channel you will not maintain is worse than one you never started, because it spends money while doing it.
How to tell which one is failing
When results disappoint, the instinct is to blame the channel. Usually it is one of three things, and they look different.
- Not enough visibility. Impressions low, few leads. A budget or ranking problem.
- Visibility without inquiries. Plenty of impressions and clicks, few calls. A message or landing page problem, not a channel problem.
- Inquiries that do not book. Leads arriving and going nowhere. Usually speed of response or the quality of the leads, and switching channel fixes neither.
The third is the most common and the most often misdiagnosed. Businesses switch agency when the real problem was that nobody called back until the following afternoon.
Running two at once
If budget allows only one done properly, do one properly. If it allows two, the pairing that works is a paid channel producing calls now with local SEO compounding underneath.
What does not work is splitting a small budget three ways. Each is then below the threshold where it produces enough data to improve, and you end up with three channels you cannot evaluate.
Where to start
Check whether your trade is eligible for Local Services Ads, and if it is, start the verification this week regardless of what else you decide. It costs nothing to begin and it is the step with the longest lead time.
If you want the sequence mapped for your specific trade and cities, we will run the analysis and hand it over. You keep it whether or not you hire us.
